Space  Academy

EXPERIENCE: Experienced: Build Complex Kits w/o Assistance; "Free Build" w/o Instructions

PRE-REQUISITE: None

DURATION: 5 sessions, 1½ hours each session

PRICE: $165 / student CLASS MAX: 10

SYNOPSIS: Blast off for LEGO-Space and learn about the unique properties of outer space and colonization while building a spaceship and a base on the Mars. Through a combination of short educational videos, graphics, and tutorials, students have a "blast" learning about space while constructing their own rockets and bases – and then it all ends in an alien invasion of our space colony.

OBJECTIVE: Learn about and address the requirements and challenges with traveling into space and building a colony on the Moon or on Mars using LEGO elements designed for the task.

APPROACH: With thousands of specialty pieces for the space theme, students design and construct the modular components required to fly to another planet or moon, land, and establish a base camp. Each day, students learn about and build the various components required for survival (oxygen, food, water, fuel, shelter, transportation, etc.) and then assemble it all together to construct a realistic modular space colony.

SKILLS ACQUIRED / EDUCATIONAL BENEFIT:
1. Science: requirements, challenges, risks to traveling and living in outer space
2. Technology: requirements to launching a rocket and safely landing on a foreign body
3. Engineering: ability to plan and build in modular phases and then assemble a finished product
4. Math: proper nomenclature, angles, and ratios of elements ("2x4 brick", "1x12 plate", "2x2 tile", "3x2 33° slope", "1x4x3" frame, etc.)

LEGO® TECHNIQUE: Studs Not on TOP (SNoT) construction, Technic integration, hinges and turntables, brackets, fine detailing with smaller elements, modular construction, multi-tiered structures

This class was a good chance to express what was in my mind by using Lego pieces to make anything I wanted. I was glad that we got to build whatever we wanted to.... Mr. Barry was nice, helpful, and if we needed to find a piece he would find it for us. He also gave us lots of tips, including substituting pieces if we ran out. Can't wait until my next class. - AB
My son's favorite store, hands down! He has taken several classes throughout the summer and loved every one of them from the space camp and a technic class to a full week of mindstorm. Dean is always so helpful and positive with the kids and you can tell he loves it just as much as the kids. I was pleasantly surprised to find not only an excellent selection of LEGO sets but the prices are very competitive. - Kris
[My son] really enjoyed the programming and robotics. I would love to see a continuation of that class that he could pursue, building on what he learned with you in the last class. This to me would be an incredible way to keep applying the knowledge learned while building even more knowledge. Then when he does have his own Mindstorms he can truly utilize it. Thanks for all you do Dean!! - Naomie
[My son] really enjoyed his first class on 6/12. It has opened his imagination to the possibilities of creation from simple sets, not only the bigger sets. He looks forward to his next class in July! - Ame_T

Awesome store for kids of all ages that love Lego. Unique and creative approach to using Lego not just for building things. The classes offered are great - engaging and thought provoking for the age taught. - John_F
My son and his friends had a great time.... We plan to sign him up for another class soon. - Becca B
